A Few Of My Favorite Things

The most beautiful thing about being free is being able to choose to do the things that you enjoy.

Lately, we've been doing a lot of gardening.  I just love it.  For Mother's Day, the kids and Mike begged, begged, begged me to spend the day on the boat with them.  They even sulked!  I insisted that we all weed the garden, and wash the porch and the outdoor furniture. We had a great time, and our yard looks super.  The kids and I have continued the fun this week.  Check out this rosemary!  Can you believe that it started out as a three inch pot a few years ago?  I told the kids that if the economy doesn't get out of the shitter that this was going to be our Thanksgiving scented Christmas tree.  Didn't really say shitter...but you know that!

Here's my little kitchen herb garden that I started from seed with the kids.  It's right outside of my kitchen window.  We're going to stick a few seedlings in there this week, too.  So far we have dill, basil, oregano and mint.  Guess I'll have to get a new rosemary, too.

More favorites!  Here are my girls on our way to our first lacrosse game of the season.  I coach our team with my brother, Matt, and my niece Annabelle is on the team.  It's so much fun that I can't stand it.

We've been reading a lot around here too.  I was thinking the other day about how much I loved reading as a kid.  I would turn the light back on as soon as my parents tucked me in.  Sometimes I would read an entire book in a night.  I loved it.  Now, our kids are so overscheduled, that there's not much time to become addicted to a character, or an author.  I sensed this void in my kids lives, and challenged them to read 100 books with me by summer's end.  They loved the idea.  So, we are going to try to get up to 100, as a group.  (Non-readers in the family get to keep a list of 'favorite books.')  We are going to celebrate our accomplishment by organizing a new and gently used book drive in our neighborhood.  We plan on furnishing our wonderful local hospital with a collection of books for the children's wing, and for the adults.  We also hope to take books to our gleaming new fire station that just opened up down the street.

This picture is hilarious to me.  We went to the library the other day, and this is the book he chose!  Poor guy...

Adding another title to the list...

I hope that you are enjoying the freedom to do the things that you like to do, too!
